A wheelchair ramp can look simple until someone tries to use it in the rain, turn at a landing, open the entry door, or push up a slope that is too steep. In Hawaiʻi, tight lots, elevated homes, salt air, drainage, and existing stairs can make the layout more important than the ramp material itself.
The best ramp plan starts with the person and the full path into the home—not a standard length selected from a catalog.
Start with the total rise and available route
Measure the vertical rise from the lower walking surface to the entry landing, then map how much horizontal space is available without blocking a driveway, gate, walkway, or required exit. The 2010 ADA Standards use a maximum 1:12 running slope for ramps on an accessible route. That is a useful design reference, but it does not automatically govern every private single-family home. Local codes, the property type, permits, and the user’s abilities still need to be checked.
Landings and turns are part of the ramp
- A stable, level space at the top and bottom
- Enough room at every change in direction
- Door swing and hardware that can be operated from the landing
- A smooth threshold into the home
- Room for a caregiver without stepping off the edge
- A safe connection to parking, driveway, or walkway
Plan for rain, drainage, and coastal exposure
Water should not collect on a landing or run toward the doorway. Surface traction matters in wet weather, but an overly aggressive texture can make rolling harder. Materials and exterior hardware should suit the exposure at the property, especially in coastal areas. Ask how the surface will be cleaned, how fasteners will be checked, and what local service is available if the ramp shifts or corrodes.
Modular, portable, and threshold solutions are different
A modular aluminum system can use landings and turns and may be adjustable later. A portable ramp is intended for limited applications and must match the user, mobility device, rise, and manufacturer limits. A threshold ramp solves a small doorway change but not a larger route with stairs, a steep walkway, or an undersized landing. Manufacturer guidance can help explain product categories, but the home still needs a site-specific plan.
