A home plan starts with the person who lives there. What do they want to do each day? What gets in the way? Those questions sit at the heart of Thrive for Life.

Watch Thrive for Life featured on Hawaii News Now Hometown Heroes (2 minutes, 33 seconds).

This archive feature introduces occupational therapists and Thrive for Life founders Damian Sempio and Catia Garell. Hawaii News Now published its story in May 2019. The video was added to our YouTube channel that November.

Connecting care with the home

In Chelsea Davis’s Hawaii News Now story, Damian and Catia describe a gap they saw when people left the hospital. A family might know that a ramp, wider doorway or shower change was needed, but still need help turning that advice into a plan.

The story shows why the person’s daily life and the home need to be considered together. It also recognizes the role of caregivers and families in helping loved ones at home.

Bring the task before the product

If you are thinking about a change, start with the task that feels hard. Getting through the front door. Reaching the bathroom. Moving between floors.

You do not need to arrive with a product picked out. Write down where the problem happens, who needs help and what you want to do. Include the person who lives in the home in that conversation.

A first step may be a closer look at the room or a change in how you use the space. A purchase is not always the place to begin.
